Vincentia | Jervis Bay
We recently worked alongside JB Landscapes to complete a garden lighting upgrade at a property in Vincentia that featured extensive grounds.
The landscaping was designed to create a natural feel, incorporating compacted gravel paths, timber boardwalks, weathering steel garden edging, bamboo screening and large sandstone boulders used as landscape features and retaining walls.
Our role was to install practical, low-level lighting throughout the garden to improve visibility and safety along the paths, while highlighting selected landscaping features.
The garden lighting plan
Effective garden lighting requires careful planning. The position, direction and type of each light must be considered before the landscaping is completed.
We worked closely with JB Landscapes to determine where lighting was required and installed the necessary electrical conduit before the paths, garden beds and other landscaping elements were finished.
Completing this work at the correct stage helped protect the cabling and avoided disturbing the completed garden later.
The lighting positions were planned around:
- The route of the gravel and timber paths
- Changes in direction and ground level
- Garden beds and established planting
- Sandstone boulders and retaining walls
- Bamboo screening
- The desired level and direction of light
Low-level path lighting
Low-level downlights were installed beside the compacted gravel paths and timber boardwalks. These fittings direct light towards the ground, helping residents see the path without over-lighting the surrounding garden.
The lights were spaced throughout the property to provide consistent illumination along the main walking routes. Their simple, dark finish allows them to blend into the landscaping during the day.
Using light to highlighting landscape features
Spotlights were also positioned throughout the garden to highlight selected features, including the sandstone boulders and bamboo screening.
Rather than lighting every section of the garden equally, the spotlights create focused areas of light. This brings attention to the natural materials and planting while retaining the darker areas that give outdoor lighting its depth.
A practical and subtle result
The completed installation improves safety and accessibility around the property after dark while complementing the landscape design.
By combining downward path lighting with carefully positioned spotlights, we were able to provide enough light for residents to move safely through the garden without making the area excessively bright.
